How to change Thinkific subscription prices for existing students

Why Thinkific keeps current students on the old price, and how to re-price them · July 2026

The short version: When you change a Thinkific subscription price, it applies to new enrollments only. Your existing students keep the price they signed up with. If you take payments through your own connected Stripe account (the classic Thinkific + Stripe setup), those subscriptions live in your Stripe account, and Thinkific's own docs say you can edit a student's price in Stripe and keep it tied to Thinkific. So you can re-price your existing students directly in Stripe, in bulk, instead of one at a time.

Why your existing students didn't get the new price

Thinkific grandfathers current students on purpose. Change a subscription's price and the new rate applies going forward, to new enrollments, while everyone already subscribed continues paying what they signed up with. There's no built-in "apply this to current students" button; Thinkific's own answer to bulk changes is a manual "Update Student Subscriptions" spreadsheet you submit to their support team. So raising your price never reaches the students you already have unless you go do it yourself.

First, which payment setup are you on?

This is the fork that decides everything:

  • Your own connected Stripe account (the long-standing Thinkific + Stripe integration): each student's subscription is a native Stripe subscription in your account. You can re-price it in Stripe, and it stays tied to Thinkific. This is the path this guide covers.
  • Thinkific Payments (Thinkific's in-house processor): the subscription isn't sitting in your own Stripe account, so you can't re-price it in Stripe. Those changes have to go through Thinkific.

Not sure? Open a student's subscription in your Stripe Dashboard and try Update subscription. If Stripe lets you change the price, you're on the own-Stripe path and can re-price all of them.

How to re-price existing Thinkific students

A Stripe price is immutable, so you create a new price and move each subscription onto it:

  1. Create the new price on the same product in Stripe.
  2. Update each student's subscription to that price, with proration_behavior: none so nobody is charged mid-cycle, or schedule it for their next renewal.
stripe.subscriptions.update("sub_123", {
  items: [{ id: "si_123", price: "price_newRate" }],
  proration_behavior: "none",
});

For more than a few students, plan for safe batching (small batches, retries on rate limits, pagination, a way to reverse), and run it in Stripe test mode first. (Here's the detail on proration_behavior and create_prorations.) Because Thinkific keeps the subscription tied to your course, the student's access continues, they just bill the new amount at renewal. Re-price one student first and confirm before doing the rest.

Doing it without a script or a support ticket

The native options are editing students one at a time in Stripe, or filling out Thinkific's spreadsheet and waiting on support. If you'd rather not do either, PricePilot Migrate Pro re-prices them from the browser: connect a restricted Stripe key, preview which students change and the MRR impact for free, exclude anyone renewing before a date you pick (or trialing, discounted, or hand-picked), choose your timing, and run it in safe batches with a one-click reverse. It works on native Stripe subscriptions, including the ones Thinkific, Ghost, beehiiv, Substack, Paid Memberships Pro, and MemberPress create in your own account.

Re-price your Thinkific students without the spreadsheet

Preview every affected student and the MRR impact for free, then run it in safe batches with a one-click reverse. Test mode is free end to end.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to existing students if I change my Thinkific subscription price?

Nothing automatically. The change applies to new enrollments only; existing students keep their original price until you move their subscription in Stripe.

Can I update the price for currently subscribed students?

Yes, if you use your own connected Stripe account. Thinkific documents editing a student's subscription price in Stripe, and it stays tied to Thinkific. Not possible on Thinkific Payments, where the subscription isn't in your account.

How do I avoid charging students mid-cycle?

Use proration_behavior: none or schedule the change for the next billing cycle.
